Tallinn, Estonia. One of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe, perfect for that flight attendant’s selfie at a quaint coffee shop to show Instagram what a world traveler she is. On the other hand, it’s been a part of Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Russian, Independent Estonia, Soviet Russia, Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, and finally independent again. In just minutes walk, the architecture ranges from Gothic to Soviet Brutalist. Over here we have an old church, here a castle; here a KGB bugged hotel, and finally a secret KGB prison. I usually avoid the pretty places, but Tallinn is surprisingly unique — and cheaper than Paris.
